Traditional medicine in Morocco

In modern-day Morocco traditional medicine practices play a big role in the healthcare of many people. Morocco has a well-documented library of traditional medicine that contains product from the animal source, herbal, mineral and even industrial.

These practices are a combination of local tradition with all the essential resources of the country and the practices of Arabic and Islamic Medicine, but it’s also influenced by berer, Andalusian, African and even western medicine.

Turmeric

Turmeric is known as kharkoum beldi in Morocco.  Is a bright yellow herb that has been used in daily cooking, dyes, and traditional medicine. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties due to its active ingredient called curcumin, which is a powerful antioxidant. In addition, it lowers the levels of 2 enzymes responsible for causing inflammation.Moroccan herbs

Several recent studies show that turmeric/curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties and modifies immune system responses. A 2006 study showed turmeric was more effective at preventing joint inflammation than reducing joint inflammation. However, turmeric can cause side effects, specifically thinning of the blood. Consult a practitioner before starting this herbal treatment.

Ginger

Skinjbir in Moroccan Arabic, is a root with anti-inflammatory properties, Gingerol is The same compounds that give ginger its strong flavor also have anti-inflammatory properties. Elements in ginger were found to reduce the action of T cells, immune cells that can add to systemic inflammation, in an analysis published in the July 2015 issue of Phytotherapy Research.

Recent studies in reducing joint swelling with ginger in RA are promising. But more human trials are needed to better understand its action. In folk medicine and Chinese medicine, ginger is used to increase blood circulation, which brings heat and healing properties to the affected area. Research shows promise for the use of ginger in all types of arthritis.

Cinnamon

In Morocco its called karfa, cinnamon is used to make natural remedies such as medicinal powders and gives flavor to sweet desserts and savoury creations in the kitchen. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde and which have antioxidant properties that help inhibit cell damage caused by free radicals and reduces inflammation around joints. When one suffers from arthritis there are chances of blood platelets clumping around the joints that prevent blood circulation and produce arachidonic acid, an inflammatory fatty acid. Cinnamaldehyde stops the release of this acid and reduces inflammation at the joints, thereby reducing pain. Studies say more research is needed to make formal recommendations about its use,

Nigella Seeds

In Morocco, nigella seeds are referred to as sanouj, these seeds are absolutely loaded with health benefits. Also referred to in english as black caraway, black cumin, and Roman coriander, these little seeds pack a powerful punch, offering protection against things like MRSA and cancer, it also helps reducing mutant cell proliferation. It may also reduce histamine production, helping to alleviate inflammatory conditions, and also reduces the activity of parasites and bacteria in the mouth and gut.

Headache is a common problem that is faced by all of us and we usually take a painkiller in order to deal with it. But nigella seed oil or Kalonji oil is an amazing natural remedy for headache that provides quick and effective results, and the best thing is it can be used both for topical application and taken orally.

Cell studies have found that black seed extract compares favorably to the chemoagent 5-fluoruracil in the suppression of colon cancer growth, but with a far higher safety profile. Animal research has found that black seed oil has significant inhibitory effects against colon cancer in rats, without observable side effects.

Nigella Sativa seeds are carminative, meaning they aid in digestion and may decrease gas, bloating and stomach pain. Black seed oil is often sometimes used in remedies for intestinal parasites. In preliminary studies, it was also shown to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells with no negative side effects.
